Stereograms of the future

For Hortensia Völckers, the artistic director of the Kulturstiftung des Bundes [German Federal Cultural Foundation] it was clear from the beginning: 100 years Bauhaus cannot only be a celebration of the past. Much rather it is time to redevelop the stimuli the Bauhaus still holds in store for the design of our future. Probably the Bauhaus agent programme is thus the most important and relevant module.

The aim of the programme, to bring the Bauhaus to schools, families and communities through innovative educational formats and to embed them there, will also be used in the new Bauhaus museums in Berlin, Dessau und Weimar. Together with pupils, with teachers, curators, artists, architects and many others, the Bauhaus agents contribute to transform these institutions into open, vivid places catering to visitors. In collaborative processes unusual approaches to the Bauhaus are created that also make the new institutions relevant to those who have so far had little or no connection to museums.

A showcase of videos and audio plays that will be on view at the opening festival of 100 years Bauhaus in January 2019, offers a small glimpse into the meanwhile more than one hundred projects of the Bauhaus agents and their partner schools.

The topics of this selection – naturally tailored to the theme of the opening festival –not only include space, body, movement or light, but also the works of historic Bauhäuslers.

With “Oskar Remixed” students from Dessau can track down the director of the Bauhaus stage, Oskar Schlemmer, in that they make it possible for festival visitors to experience the capacity to move with costumes through cinematic sequences. By contrast, children and youth – under the guidance of the Weimar agents – used a quote by the Bauhaus director Hannes Meyer as an opportunity to take the question of the dependency of the individual from the community to the city; their work is presented by a cinematic teaser and a sound collage, excerpts of which will also be on permanent exhibition in the new Bauhaus Museum Weimar.

Apart from this approach to historic actors, the presented works particularly emphasise current design issues. A project by the Berlin Bauhaus agents that engages with the research of learning spaces makes this approach particularly clear. How do spaces have to be designed and equipped in order to facilitate practical learning experiences? The video documentation of a learning space portrayed at the empty Bauhaus-Archiv and presented at the festival, explores the fundamental question how schools and museums have to be designed in order to also remain relevant as places of learning in the future.

Further cinematic presentations (among them on a lighting workshop from Weimar) and sound installations (such as the audio piece “Moholy-Nagy” from Dessau) are complemented by further training for teachers and workshops for students, through which the work of the Bauhaus agents at the Berliner Akademie der Künste becomes palpable. They enable visitors to themselves become creators of “stereograms”, very much in the vain of a party at the Bauhaus stage around which the opening festival of 100 years bauhaus is centred.
