The Total Dance Theater

The whole theatre should be a stage! Bauhaus artists dreamed of a theatre that would liberate its audiences from their passivity and place them at the centre of the action in an imaginary world. Acclaimed choreographer Richard Siegal and cult band Einstürzende Neubauten make the bauhaus dream of “total theatre” a reality in this anniversary year. Fusing body and space together, they deploy virtual reality to transplant Walter Gropius’s and Oskar Schlemmer’s experiments in stagecraft into the digital age.

The Total Dance Theatre

A place where art and technology fuse into completely new experiences, where the boundaries between stage and auditorium, performers and audience dissolve—Bauhaus artists Walter Gropius and Oskar Schlemmer, the creator of the Triadic Ballet, dreamed of this “total theater” a hundred years ago. Now the virtual reality production The Totale Dance Theatre turns this vision into reality. The installation, conceived and realized under the auspices of the Interactive Media Foundation, transports guests to a 400-meter-high virtual reality dome. With VR glasses, visitors to the PalaisPopulaire become actors in a spectacular work of art that explores the relationship between humans and machines in the digital age.

As only a limited number of visitors can use the VR at the same time, it cannot be guaranteed that all visitors can experience it. An appointment can be booked at the exhibition room during opening hours. We would like to point out that the VR experience is not suitable for visitors with limited mobility.

A 360° music video for the bauhaus centenary

The relationship between man and machine that the bauhaus was already exploring even a hundred years ago here becomes a three-dimensional audiovisual experience in an immersive dance video that can be viewed on the ARTE 360° app from 17th January.

The 360° video is based on the interactive, three-dimensional, VR dance experience of the same name being staged as part of the opening festival at the Berlin Akademie der Künste from 16th to 24th January 2019. Das Totale Tanz Theater 360 is an Interactive Media Foundation and Filmtank project created in collaboration with ARTE/ZDF for the multimedia Bauhaus Spirit project.

Das Totale Tanz Theater 360 is based on the three-dimensional VR installation Das Totale Tanz Theater, an Interactive Media Foundation and Filmtank project co-created with Artificial Rome and supported by the German Federal Cultural Foundation’s Bauhaus heute Fund and the Medienboard Berlin Brandenburg.
